Summary

The story began in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, in the frontier town of Threshold. At the crowded Hook and Hatchet Tavern, six strangers were forced to share the last empty table: Mira Thorn, Herbert Trebreh, Faela Thornwood, Auriel Valden, Elanduil, and Lex Valerious. Their introductions were uneven. Lex spoke with heroic confidence, Mira reacted with irritation, Herbert cheerfully spoke to his spellbook Barnaby and poured drink onto the floor and table, Auriel identified herself as a priest of Tritherion, Faela quietly introduced herself, Elanduil carried himself with charm, and Lex spoke often of justice and Heironeous.

A tavern worker brought drinks and pointed them toward a notice board, saying they looked capable and broke. Mira retrieved a notice from Clifton Caldwell, who needed armed individuals to clear Caldwell Castle of squatters, goblins, kobolds, and other creatures. The reward was three thousand gold pieces after the castle was verified cleared. The contract forbade burning the castle, looting structural treasures, heirlooms, furnishings, or hidden vaults, and leaving hostile occupants alive within the walls.

The group approached Caldwell’s agent, Elvin Kross, in the back corner of the tavern. Elvin repeated the terms, warned that others had already failed, and made clear that Caldwell wanted the castle cleared, not destroyed or looted. He kept fifty-five gold pieces as his administrative fee, offered each adventurer a fifty-gold advance, and sold healing potions against their final pay for 100 each. Final payment upon completion is 3,000 - 55(administration fee) = 2,945 - 300(for supplies) = 2,645 - 600(healing potions) = 2,045 The group signed the contract, received the iron key to the castle gate, and chose to leave in the morning rather than travel by night.

The next morning, Mira was outside with Stinky, a filthy little goblin who followed her because she had once fed him. Mira admitted she had tried and failed to get rid of him, but still cared for him. Lex praised her for taking responsibility for the creature and suggested there might be hope for him. Before leaving Threshold, Herbert stopped at the magic shop, failed to buy magical bracers because they were too expensive, and instead purchased spell components including sand, crickets, dried rose petals, fireflies, and clear crystal. With supplies gathered, the party followed the old logging trail west toward Caldwell Castle.

After several hours, the castle came into view. The front gate was barred and locked from the outside, which made Auriel question whether the lock was meant to keep creatures in rather than out. The group checked around the castle but found no secret entrance. Lex used the key, opened the gate, and the doors groaned inward, releasing stale, cold air into a dark stone corridor. Inside, they found a dusty passage with doors on either side. Lex opened one door into a makeshift guard room where four goblins argued over piles of coins. Herbert cast sleep on two of them, Faela killed one while Lex killed another, and the remaining two goblins surrendered. Mira and Faela questioned them in Goblin, and after learning they mostly hid and sneaked around, the party allowed them to leave. Lex gave them a coin and told them to commit no more crimes.

The party searched the guard room and found coins and a gem, then moved into a dining room filled with overturned tables, benches, dust, and cobwebs. Under one table they found a sack of silver and gems. This caused disagreement over whether the money counted as castle property. Lex was reluctant to violate the agreement, while Mira argued that loose coin found among squatters should be fair game. The party decided to keep the treasure. Farther inside, Elanduil listened at another door and heard nothing. When the door opened, a man with a battle axe ran to a wall and began hammering on it, apparently raising an alarm. Mira moved to intercept whoever might respond, and another man rushed out of the room east of the first room. He struck Mira hard, but Faela killed him. The first man, Lucious, surrendered and said Borys was in the next room to the west.

Elanduil called for Borys, who surrendered after Lex confronted him. Lex urged Lucious and Borys to abandon thievery, take honest work, and seek the temple of Heironeous in Threshold. Mira warned them that if she saw them again, she would kill them, and the two men left. The party searched Quintis, found coins, and healed Mira with magic and Lex’s laying on of hands. Through Lucious’s room, Elanduil found doors leading into a grassy courtyard open to the sky. Two wolves rushed the doors when he opened them. Mira tried to calm one while the other attacked, and Lex killed the aggressive wolf. Mira calmed the remaining wolf, which accepted Stinky’s presence. Stinky led the wolf out through the front of the castle and returned proudly. With the wolves dealt with, the group looked around the courtyard and saw six doors leading deeper into Caldwell Castle.

This is where the session ended.

Detail

The story began in the Grand Duchy of Karameikos, in the frontier town of Threshold. The Hook and Hatchet Tavern was crowded with adventurers, laborers, and travelers seeking food, drink, warmth, and shelter. With every other table full, six strangers found themselves forced together at the last empty table in the tavern: Mira Thorn, Herbert Trebreh, Faela Thornwood, Auriel Valden, Elanduil, and Lex Valerious.

The introductions were uneven. Lex entered with heroic confidence and wished peace upon the hall. Mira reacted with open irritation. Herbert introduced himself with strange cheer, spoke to his book, Barnaby, and poured drink onto the floor and table to appease unseen concerns. Auriel identified herself as a priest of Tritherion. Faela quietly introduced herself. Elanduil carried himself with charm and confidence, while Lex spoke often of justice and Heironeous.

A tavern worker brought drinks and pointed the group toward a notice board, saying they looked capable and broke. Mira quickly retrieved the notice. It announced a job from Clifton Caldwell, who required armed individuals to clear Caldwell Castle of lawless squatters, goblins, kobolds, and other creatures. The reward was three thousand gold pieces, paid after the castle was verified cleared. The contract forbade burning the castle, looting the estate’s structural treasures, or leaving hostile occupants alive within the walls.

The group asked where to find Caldwell’s agent and were directed to Elvin Kross, who sat in the back corner of the tavern. They approached him with the notice. Elvin explained the terms again: the castle was to be cleared, not destroyed, and all heirlooms, furnishings, hidden vaults, and structural treasures belonged to Caldwell. He warned them that others had tried and failed. He kept fifty-five gold pieces as his administrative fee, offered each adventurer a fifty-gold advance, and sold healing potions against their final pay for those who wanted them. The group signed the contract, received the iron key to the castle gate, and decided to leave in the morning rather than travel by night.

The next morning, the group gathered in the tavern for breakfast. Mira was outside with Stinky, a filthy little goblin who followed her because she had once fed him. Stinky was foul-smelling, simple, and attached to Mira, who admitted she had tried and failed to get rid of him but still cared for him. Lex praised her for taking responsibility for the creature and suggested there might be hope for him.

Before leaving Threshold, the party stopped for supplies. Herbert visited the magic shop and tried to buy magical bracers, but they were far too expensive. Instead, he purchased spell components: sand, live crickets, dried rose petals, fireflies, and a piece of clear crystal. With supplies gathered, the party left town and followed the old logging trail west toward Caldwell Castle.

After several hours, the forest pressed close around them and the castle came into view. The front gate was barred and locked from the outside. Auriel noted that this seemed more like something meant to keep creatures in than out, causing concern that the job might not be exactly what they had been told. The group checked the front and sides of the castle but found no secret entrance. Lex used the key, opened the gate, and the doors groaned inward, releasing stale, cold air from the dark stone corridor beyond.

Inside, they found a dusty passage with doors to either side. Lex opened one and found a makeshift guard room where four goblins argued loudly over piles of coins. Lex declared that justice had come. Herbert cast sleep, dropping two of the goblins. One goblin attacked Mira but missed. Elanduil shot another, and Faela killed one with her weapon. The remaining goblins were forced to surrender. Mira and Faela questioned them in Goblin. The goblins claimed there were only a few more of their kind inside and that they mostly hid and sneaked around. Faela suggested letting them leave if they were willing to go. Lex gave them a coin and told them to leave and commit no more crimes. The goblins fled into the woods.

The party searched the guard room and found coinage and a gem. They then moved on to a dining room filled with overturned tables, benches, dust, and cobwebs. Under one table they found a sack of silver and gems. This led to disagreement over whether the money counted as castle property. Lex was reluctant to violate the agreement, while Mira argued that loose coin found among squatters should be fair game. The party decided to keep what they found.

Farther inside, Elanduil listened at another door but heard nothing. When the door was opened, a man with a battle axe ran to a wall and began hammering on it with the haft of his weapon, apparently raising an alarm. Mira assumed as much and ran to the door next to the wall that the man had been hitting. She waited outside. That door burst open and a second man rushed out. Mira struck at him but missed, and he hit her hard. Faela charged in and killed the man, Quintis. Auriel, Lex, and Elanduil attacked the other man. Outnumbered, Lucious surrendered and offered a pouch if they would let him go. He said Borys was in the next room.

Elanduil called for Borys, and the man inside scrambled in fear. Lucious told him to come out. Borys surrendered after Lex confronted him. Lex pressed both men to abandon thievery, take up honest work, and seek the temple of Heironeous in Threshold. Mira warned them that if she saw them again, she would kill them. Lucious and Borys left. The party searched Quintis and found coins on him. Faela healed Mira a little with magic, and Lex also laid hands on her, restoring more of her strength.

Through the room that Lucious had occupied, Elanduil found doors leading into a grassy courtyard open to the sky. When he cracked the doors, he saw two wolves. They rushed toward the door, but he shut it in time. Mira decided to try calming one of them. When the doors were opened again, she focused on one wolf while the other remained aggressive. The aggressive wolf attacked, and Lex killed it. Mira successfully calmed the other wolf. Stinky approached it, and the wolf accepted his presence. Stinky then led the wolf out through the front of the castle and returned proudly to Mira.

With the wolves dealt with, the group looked around the courtyard and saw six doors leading deeper into Caldwell Castle.

That was where the session ended.
