Summary

Detail

The Company Clandestine stood on a landing at the Rook’s Eye, overlooking the dark, churning waters. Below them, a small cave sat at the edge of the shoreline, where the tide lapped against the stone. They debated their entry, noting that to reach the cave, they would have to traverse a treacherous, 70-foot drop along wet, black rock.

X’or held the rope steady while Cal-El carefully made his way down the slippery cliff. Reaching the rocky outcropping below, he began hammering pitons into the stone to create a path for the others. He wrapped his hammer in cloth to muffle the metallic ring against the echoes of the waves.

Inside the cave, Cal discovered a large, iron-bound double door of recent construction. He sent for Eryn. She checked for traps and attempted to pick the lock, but the mechanism refused to yield. She eventually decided that this was beyond her ability and sent for Symon. He cast a Knock spell, but the magic merely glowed briefly before dissipating, leaving the door barred. Realizing they lacked the necessary key, the group backtracked and ascended the exterior stairs toward a square building on a platform above.

Finding the building’s door unlocked, they entered a chamber with a staircase descending into the dark below. Eryn checked it out by descending into the darkness, her elven vision guiding her through a hallway lit by flickering torches. As she reached an opening, she found the source of the shouting coming from a landing above her. She heard the sounds of shouting and mechanical cranking coming from a dock area to the west.

They discussed how to proceed. Symon would follow Eryn in and cast Wizard Eye to scout the docks from a safe distance. He returned and told everyone what he saw. Through the magical eye, he saw a crane operator perched on a ledge and two pirates on the docks below, overseeing a group of enslaved goblins who were loading crates and barrels. The Company coordinated a silent strike and began moving into place.

Captain Hurst stumbled into the first pit trap they would find down here. He cried out in pain. Fortunately, the noise was such that the pirates didn't hear him. They got him out, Angelique healed some of his damage and they went back to their plan.

Eryn climbed the ledge and slipped past the pirate operating the crane and up some stairs and then down some stairs where she found the door leading out to the lower part of the docks. She now blocked the escape of the pirates below. X’or climbed up to the ledge and grabbed the crane operator, throwing him backward toward the group, where he was knocked unconscious and bound.

The ambush was quickly compromised when the crane’s load slipped and crashed into the water with a loud splash. The pirates and goblins on the docks were shocked but before long, Cal worked the crane and lifted the crates that had been dropped and mumble something about it breaking but he'd fixed it now.

X'or and Cassandra caught up to Eryn and they launched an assault on the two pirates below. The pirates on the docks drew their cutlasses and attacked. Cal-El fired arrows from the gallery, while Eryn used her Boots of Striding and Springing to leap past X'or and land on a dock facing a second pirate while X'or had engaged the first pirate. Cassandra and Angelique provided cover with their bows as the pirates were systematically cut down. During the chaos, the enslaved goblins scrambled into boats, and the Company allowed them to flee into the mist.

With the docks secured, the party searched the cargo. They found crates of iron cannonballs and barrels of Fritz Grimm’s explosive alchemical powder. To sabotage House Umbridge’s operation, they dumped the powder into the sea and heaved the heavy shot into the deep water.

The group then approached a metal door further in. As Eryn pushed it open, they were hit by a violent, putrid stench of decay so overwhelming that Eryn staggered back and stumbled upon another pit trap. Cal-El, also reeling from the horrible stench, stumbled into another pit trap. Following Eryn, they entered a weapons storage room. There, they were ambushed by two ghastly undead creatures that had been feasting on dead bodies among the crates. X'or and Eryn stopped the undead from leaving the room. Angelique stepped forward and successfully used her holy power to turn the Ghasts, allowing X’or and Eryn to finish them.

Continuing their exploration, Eryn went into constant trap checking mode. She detected and disarmed a pressure-switch pit trap on a stairway landing. From the landing, the path went east and west. East was up stairs, west was down stairs. They descended the western stairs to a small, lit office containing a desk and a chair. Eryn searched the desk and found a prisoner log; while it listed many individuals, there was no mention of Princess Seraphine Valoris. There were a lot of names though, some crossed out and some with the letter “T” beside them.

Eryn also found a family history ledger concerning a powerful and corrupted lineage known as “Stonegate”. Both Angelique and Symon looked at it didn't recognize them from the history. Eryn decided to keep the book to read so she left the book she had picked up earlier on Ogre Ethics to replace it.

In the southern wall of the office was another door. Company Clandestine moved toward the iron door. Eryn picked the lock, revealing a grim chamber where skeletons remained chained to the walls. The air was thick with the scent of rot as they prepared to push deeper into the fortress dungeons.

This is where the session ended.
