Disaster At Dame Gold S Estate (Session 33)

August 17, 2024

Summary

Detail

They started this session at Wyndy Cragg meeting with Black Kerr. She was the Alchemist that created the antidote to Dame Gold's brother's ailment. Worrying about how magic could disrupt the antidote's effectiveness, they asked her if the antidote could be carried safely within a Bag of Holding. She felt it could possibly damage it. Being in a bag next to it should be fine though, just not in the bag of Holding. When asked about how the magic could damage it, specifically something like a Teleport or a Fireball spell. Casting the fireball doesn't hurt it, being the target of a fireball would definitely damage it. Being the target of the spell is where the energy is released.

They were leaving for Zazesspur, following the road, they road on horses that Dame Gold provided. They'd been riding most of the day when they stopped. It was getting dark out. As they stopped, they heard a rider approaching fast from behind. They saw Christopher riding up at a frantic pace, yelling and flailing his arms. Before he could make it to them, his horse collapsed from exhaustion. He continued running toward them yelling for them to help. As he got closer, he told them that Wyndy Cragg had been attacked and burned.

Orcs and Humans together attacked the mansion. There were some killed and some were taken. They road back, at a brisk pace, but were careful not to ride their hoses into the ground. As they arrived, their were a bunch of people already surveying the damage at the mansion. Duke Viloth was there and explained that they were attacked by Orc's and Humans. Katrina, Bernaldo, and Jack were killed. Joseph, Derish, and Dame Gold were missing, presumed taken.

The attackers came in town by boat, killing the guards at the gate house on the eastern side of town. They made it to the mansion where they attacked and claimed prisoners. They re-boarded their boats and headed down the river to the west. They found one of the killers that had been caught and killed under a beam when it collapsed. They found a slip of paper that read,

Dated 10 days ago: lv.pt. good wynds

Dated 5 days ago: water at Alrad, must stay abd

Todays date: rd. tewday, cpt. say fyve day tew port. Say few sords.

The party decided to go after them. The captors will move much faster by boat but the question was, would they disembark somewhere along the way or go all the way to Myratma. The company decided that they would have to go by horse in order to see if they'd come ashore some place and dropped off the prisoners.

They left, rode the rest of the night and through the next day. They camped the following night some 60 miles from Darromar. They got in a full rest and then set out again. They travelled for another good part of the day when they came across a small camp of three people. One was a Dwarf and the other two were Human.

One of the strangers approached the company carefully. They talked and found out his name was Targill Redd. The Dwarf was named Agnar Ruvik, and the other name was Borthenian Hoetoe. They were out searching for slavers that had attacked their town and taken some of their citizens. Agnar and Targill were former adventurers helping Borthenian, who was a farmer, to find and rescue his family.

The company told them that they were also looking for the people that had attacked the home of a friend and taken them and others. The three had not seen a boat come by but had only been here for a short time. They could have already passed. They agreed to combine there search and waited while the party of three broke down their camp.

Audra quietly suggested that Kipp circle the camp to see if he saw anything funny about the setup or odd tracks coming into or leaving the area. She was not feeling good about this group. Kipp agreed and slowly meandered around the area, trying not to look too obvious, the others spread out a little and grazed the horses and just seemed to walk around in general. They finished breaking down the camp about the same time as Kipp had made it back to the group. He hadn't spotted anything that didn't support their story. Maybe Audra was uneasy about nothing, but uneasy she was.

They set out down the road. As they'd travelled Borthenian tripped at one point and appeared to hurt himself. Agnar and Targill gave him a hard time but Pyreece went back to check him out. As she was checking his arm, he slipped a piece of paper into her hand. She concealed it while checking his arm and declared that it wasn't broken. The other two picked on Borthenian a little more before they all set out again.

As they travelled, Pyreece stayed to the back and slipped a look at the paper Borthenian had slipped to her, it said,

TRAP.. SLAVERS..

WILL kILL MY FAMILY…

Pyreece found a way to slip the note to Kipp while they walked. They continued on while Pyreece tried to give Kipp a little cover so he could read the note. He did read it about the same time they came across two boats tied off on the river. They were a good couple of hundred feet away from the shore. They could see some forms laying down by the boats. They couldn't tell much about them though.

Kipp quietly got the word out to Brandy and Oglesby on their new friends. Pyreece got the word out to Audra. No one told Elenor what they'd been told. Kipp suggested that Targill scout out the boats and the people down there. Targill moved forward. Pyreece moved around behind the group while Audra had moved back towards Agnar and worked her way carefully behind him while seemingly scouting out the shoreline and a quick path to there.

Pyreece cast a Hold Person spell on Agnar but it failed. He felt a little funny but thankfully didn't realize what had happened. Seeing it failed, watching Targill move further away, Pyreece walked down as if to pass by Agnar and at the last moment, turned to strike him with her flail. The fight was on. Kipp, Pyreece, and Audra squared up against Agnar. Targill yelled and ran back to attack Pyreece from behind with a nasty backstab.

The four men at the boat got up and started to run toward the trouble. Brandy moved to a good vantage point and fired on one of them. Before she could fire a second volly, the man reached her and she pulled out her short sword. The other three picked positions from which to fire on the company. Elenor used Magic Missiles against Agnar once but then Targill turned and fired at her. She cast a slow spell on him and ruined the rest of his day.

Oglesby moved down and engaged Targill directly. The man on Brandy went down and the other three ran back to the boats. Brandy followed and fired on them continually as they started untying their boats. The man working with the bigger boat died after the first rope was untied but didn't make it to the second rope so the boat stayed anchored to the shore. It's bow slipped out into the main channel. The other two guys got their boat untied and dove in, hiding below the railing.

Pyreece went down but Agnar went down promptly after that. Targill didn't survive much longer after that. During all of this, Borthenian had been firing on both Agnar and Targill. He wasn't a great shot but he did manage to hit them each. With those two down, everyone was making a beeline to the boats. Audra and Elenor had the same idea and each gave Pyreece a goodberry getting her back up.

Oglesby reached the boats but couldn't get an angle to fire on the two escaping as they were ducked under the railing. Brandy however jumped up onto the roof of the larger ship and fired down on one of the two. She killed him. The other one ran to the back of the smaller boat and into a room, closing the door. As their boat came along side the bigger boat, Brandy jumped over to it, ran to the tiller, and steered the boat back to toward the other boat.

Kipp had already tried to throw a rope to wrangle the other boat but missed. With the boat coming at them now, they were able to tie the two boats together. Audra arrived down there then and threw Oglesby a rope while he was on the bow of the larger boat. They tied off and pull the front of the boat back to the shore. The remaining slaver jumped from the back of the smaller boat attempting to swim to the other shore to get away. Brandy cut him down quickly.

They found no one on the two boats. When the searched to shoreline, they found where a group, upwards of 20, had disembarked and were making their way North West. It was late so they rested that night, after Pyreece did a lot of healing. They slept on the larger boat while at least one was on watch along the shoreline. The next morning, they set out following the trail left by the slavers.

They travelled a good 10 miles or so and came across a quarry. The settled in just out of sight and took in what they could see of the place. It was just a first glance but what they saw was a manned watch tower on the northeast corner of the quarry the quarry itself, and a large building, with battlements, on the eastern side of the quarry.

That is where this session ended.
