Summarized

Well, last week, Eryn searched the prison. That was a very risky proposition. This week though, they searched the remainder of the tunnels. They then had to make some plans. How would they present their findings to Sir Charles. How will they gain his trust. Is he to be trusted himself? They weren’t exactly sure who to trust. Well, let’s see how they handled all of this.

The Company started in the secret room they found. The decided to complete their search of the tunnel system including the hatch leading up in the room where Tommy Died. They started there. They went up the ladder and found it led to the cell they had occupied when they were arrested and held at the jail. It can’t be opened inside the cell without tools. The western tunnel out of the room below it led to another domed room with some kobald packs. They got 10 copper each four that. They went to the eastern tunnel outside the other secret room and found it led to a dome below another crapper. This one was probably under the Temple of Phi. The went back to the secret door that led to Sir Charles’ home.

Eryn went in and Xor blocked it from completely closing by placing a dagger in the seam so it could not completely close. She was in a wine cellar, she made found nothing worth noting do there. She moved up the stairs into the back of the kitchen. There was a back door to the north that appeared to lead out of the house. She found a cook, busy preparing a meal. On the first floor she found a small dinning room, a sitting room, a trophy room and a big formal dining room. It was being prepared for guests tonight. There was a woman servant setting the dining room table who ran backs and forth to the kitchen. On the second floor, she found a secured storage room for very expensive gowns for the ladies of the house. The found Lady Mary’s bedroom but didn’t go as Mary was inside. She found a large home office/library combo. There were lots of books, two chests and a desk. The desk had official paperwork with seals on them. She looked through the papers and found papers on laws, the changing of laws, decrees, prison rosters, reports from his guards and other people that work for him. She checked the prison roster for Rogard, Fran, and Shea’s names. She found Rogard‘s and Fran‘s names quickly but she had to search back quite a ways to find Shea’s. They only list their charge, date of offense, and sentence. She checked the chests. One chest had files, ordered by date. They went back over a very long time. She searched for the date that Rogard was sentenced to see what was in there about his situation. There was no new information they hadn’t already heard there. She looked forward from that date and found that since his arrest, the laws were changing. Magic was forbidden and Charles seemed to be harsher in his judgements. There was a definite change from that point forward. There was nothing to indicate the reason for the change. She opened the other chest and found financial records. Some on trade, some on civil services, the prison’s budget, and other books like that. If she were an accountant, it might make more sense, but she didn’t have enough time to do that kind of research. Rogard’s book wasn’t readily apparent. She checked both chests for secret compartments but didn’t find anything. She looked through the books on the shelves quickly but they were very general. She didn’t see any place in the room that looked like some place to hide the book.

She left that room and moved to the north set of pocket doors which turned out to be the master bedroom. Mrs. Charles was in the room through the west door of the bedroom. It sounded like she was taking a bath. There was a back door to the outside. There was an eastern door to a personal office. She had to pick her way in and relocked it awhile she searched it. She looked at everything on the desk. There were writings about theories of things, writings that talked about research, writings mostly about the ancient history of Paldegora. One book in particular was about magic. Another was about piracy and the pirates of old. Another was an analysis of dragons. She looked to see if she could tell where he was in each book, trying to find out specifically what he was reading about. The books were very dogeared as he’d been reading all through them. He wrote something about his stream of thoughts. It talked about some sort of connection between all of these. He was desperate to find out everything he could about it. He referenced the book he had taken from Rogard. He was desperate to understand what the book meant and what he’d found and how it all tied back to history. He didn’t write down anything specific from the book but by examining the writing, it appeared to scare the shit out of him. There was one passage that said he had read and interpreted as much as he could and believed the book is dangerous and in order to safeguard it, he hid it. There is no indication where he hid it.

She checked the big chest behind the desk and found a needle trap. It was a standard needle trap and she determined that she could disarm it and rearm it after she was done looking around. She did disarm it and unlocked it and opened it. She found many bags of various coins and gems. Diamonds, silver, gold, copper, sapphires, rubies were among the bags in the chest. She thought about taking a few diamonds to be used as spell components, but there were only about 25 which would make it easier to see them missing. She also thought, that is not what she is here for and she must stay on task. She ended up taking nothing. She checked the chest for secret compartments. Finding none, she closed it up, relocked it, and rearmed the trap. She then checked the desk for secret compartments. Finding none, she checked the book case. She found it was full of books that would be interesting to a lord or the commander of an army. It was books on military tactics, military training, and sword training. She moved back to the door and listened carefully. She unlocked it and cracked it slightly. There was no one in the bedroom so she moved out of the office, close the door, and relocked it. She moved to the chest at the foot of the bed. It wasn’t trapped or locked. It was full of mostly mens clothes and she didn’t find any secret compartments. She heard what sounded like the person bathing, getting out of the tub. She moved to the wardrobe, finding it unlocked, opened it finding more of his clothing. She checked for secret compartments and didn’t find any. She closed it back up and moved back through the double doors, out of the bedroom.

She went back to the big dining room when she had a chance, she reinterred it and checked the door in the western wall, it was a guest privy. With that done, she headed back to the stairs to the cellar. She was presented with the opportunity to search the servants quarters hen thew butler exited. She didn’t find anything of interest there. She Mae her way back to downs to the secret door and out to the cave she came in through. She told the group everything she had seen. They decided that she should go back in and be a fly on the wall at his dinner. See who shows up and what they track about. She snuck back in and once all the guests arrived, they made their way to the dining room. There was Father Nathanial, an Acolite, and Captain Murdock. Most of the conversation was mundane but Father Nathanial asked about allowing him into the prison to console those housed their and see to their spiritual needs. Sir Charles said the time may be come but he was not ready to change his policies where the prison was concerned yet. Captain Murdock talked about the guard and how they’ve been doing, and the goings on in town. He asked Sir Charles if he knew Elmer was in town, Charles let him know that he knew and that he and Elmer had spoken. When he said he and Elmer had spoken, it was as if he was a little aggravated. Captain Murdock and Sir Charles moved into a sitting room and Eryn slipped in behind them.

They broke out pipes and talk about old stories and laughed and smoked. Then the subject changed to what’s been going on and concerns about the increasing violence and banditry going on. Sir Charles talked about drilling the guards more and making sure everyone was vigilant, keeping an eye on everyone’s movements, especially anyone new moving in to town. They didn’t have a ton of new people coming in but when they did, he wanted them to keep an eye on them. They did discuss the Company, as a group that’s come in and is helping Elmer. They didn’t seem to think of the Company as a threat but they didn’t trust them one hundred percent either. Charles just asked Murdock to keep an eye on them. They came from the guild and Elmer hired them so he was not overly concerned about them but it was good to be cautious, especially these days. That was the gist of their conversation. They continued drinking and smoking a while longer telling off color jokes and such. Captain Murdock left and Sir Charles went upstairs while his staff worked to clean up after them. Eryn returned to the secret entrance and left the house, closing it up. She told everyone what happened and what she had learned. Symon seemed to feel better about Sir Charles. Based on all that Eryn saw and heard, it seemed clear that Sir Charles was genuinely concerned for the safety of the town and it’s people. He seemed to be hyper focused on history.

Cal-El checked on the goblin prisoners and they were still there and fine. He feed them some jerky and gave them some water. The party moved back to the gate to see if they could get out. The gate was up and the way out was clear. They discussed that it would be best, to talk to Sir Charles and Captain Murdock at the same time. That way, if one is bad and starts taking action that would prove that, the other would be there to witness it. They also decided that maybe they should get Elmer and have him with them as well. They would explain that there was a plan, by goblins, to kill Sir Charles and assault the town. They would show them all of the evidence that they found indicating an impending invasion. They would tell them the number of giant rats, goblins, hobgoblins, and kobalds that they killed to prevent the attack on Sir Charles and his family. They would explain what happened to the chickens, and tell them about Tommy. They also decided to draw a rough map of the place so they could show them where everything was, except for the places they wished to keep secret. Symon asked, what would we say when they asked, ”How did you find this place!”. Angelique suggested that they say they were searching for Tommy. Eryn added that they were also searching for what happened to the chickens. They found a clump of feathers near this opening and foot prints indicating recent activity near the opening to that place. Sewer systems are a good place for bad things to happen. They just followed their gut instinct and started a search of the system. When they ask, why didn’t you come and get the guards, Symon said, “We would say that we wanted to make sure there was something to report!”. They also gathered a couple of the insignia’s they’d found. They kept one for themselves for reference.

Eryn changed back into her armor, since the invisibility spell was about to end. They rested and healed some before she went back to the whirlpool to exit that way and see where it came out. The rest exited the main entrance and waited on her. Once out, she noted where the entrance was and made her way west to the rest of the group. They made their way into the Dogg Butt and saw Cassandra and Elmer sitting at a table talking. Elmer motioned them over to talk. Cassandra asked if we’d found Shea and talked to her. Eryn told her that we searched and found one roster that indicated she was there but another official roster from inside the prison didn’t list her. They both said, “So you made it into the prison?”. Eryn said, we saw a prison roasted in the prison and Shea wasn’t on it. Cassandra was furious at this point slamming her fist down and exclaiming, “If he did anything to her, I’ll kill that son-of-a!”. Elmer tried to calm her down while Symon asked, “If who, did something to her?”. She answered “Blackmore, who did you think?”. Elmer said, “Now Cassandra, you don’t know anything at this point. We just know that she’s in there. It’s odd that they didn’t find her.”. He turned his attention back to the Company and asked, what happened?

Eryn and Symon explained that they have a lot of information they need to present to Sir Charles and they’d like Elmer and Captain Murdock to accompany them while they talk to him. Elmer told them that he did talk to Sir Charles like we had asked him to do. He told them that Sir Charles and he are old friends and we’re still old friends but we just didn’t see eye to eye. He said that Charles mentioned to him about the book, and I asked him what was in it and he just got angry about it and said it wasn’t any of my business. I told him that absolutely, it was my business, I’d lost my whole adventuring party over this stuff. Sir Charles told me I may have the right to know but it was his judgement that, he was not going to tell me what was in the book at this point. ”And my right is because I lost my wife and my two daughters and it’s not going to happen again, not on my watch!”. He was very funny about it. I pressed him on it. I told him that if he had something that important, there are people in the world that need to know, need to know what you’ve found, what you have. He said, ”That may be true, but now is not the time!”. I told him that he was being very foolish about this, there are a lot of people we can trust with this. He told me that he realized that, but he didn’t want to discuss it any further. We kind of left a little aggravated with each other. Elmer said that he new that Sir Charles lost his wife and daughter, they disappeared. I lost my love and all my friends. We both have an interest in this. But it has something to do with magic and something to do with dragons, he knew that much. Because that’s where we both lost everything important to us. Symon noted that Cassandra seemed surprised by what she was hearing. Elmer picked up on it and said he’d probably said too much in front of her but he said she was trustworthy, she and Dan both. Eryn is watching the rest of the room to see if anyone else in the room is indicating that they are paying attention. It didn’t seem so.

Warden Blackmore, and two other men came in. Symon, seeing this, turned quickly to Cassandra who was getting up. He said, “Chill!”, but she was already moving quickly toward him. She confronted him right there. He stopped and looked at her and said, “Cassandra! Good morning!”. Cassandra said, “So where is Shea?”. He answered, “What do you mean, where is Shea, you know where Shea is, she’s in the prison.”. Cassandra asked, “What have you done with her?”. He answered, “My dear, I haven’t done anything with her other than keep her locked up due to her sentence.”. Cassandra said, “Well I’m sure you’ve done something…”. He cut her off saying, “I’ve done nothing with her, she’s fine.”. Cassandra said, “Well if she’s fine, then why don’t you let me come see her?”. He said, “We seem to have this same conversation over and over again Cassandra! It’s not my policy or my decision. Again, you need to take this up with Sir Charles. He makes the laws and the policies and I have to follow them. I’m sorry again, but there is nothing I can do about it.”. Cassandra said, “Well you have to agree that what happened to her is wrong!”. He said, “Dear, what I think about her case is irrelevant. I wish I could help you but it’s impossible. Now if you don’t mind, I need to tend to my guests, we have business to talk about.”. She’s fuming and Elmer calls out to her and she comes back over and sits down, sullen. The Warden walked by and looked over and nodded at the party, his guests looked on quizzically. The Company wondered who they were. They headed to a far table next to the window and didn’t seem to pay any more attention to the Company, Elmer, and Cassandra. They laughed and talked and the bar maids came out bringing them items already prepared like they were expecting them. They brought out all of the good stuff, the good ham, the good eggs, all the better quality items.

Angelique went to the bar and asked Dogger for some more of that special tea. She then whispered to him, ”Who are those guys?”. Dogger glanced over at them and replied, “I’ve never seen them before! It must be guests or friends of his. He told me the other day that he had some people coming in from out of town.”. Angelique said, “Okay, I just know that I’ve never seen them in town for as long as we’ve been here now.”. He gave her the tea and she returned to the table to let everyone know that Dogger didn’t know who they were either. The warden and his guest talked in low voices and chuckled and laughed. Eryn tried to read their lips but they were too far away for that. Bar maids kept going back and forth, bringing them stuff. The guests were doing more eating than Blackmore was. Watching his body language, he appeared to be glad handing them, buttering them up. Symon reckoned that they weren’t from around here. They were probably from one of the major cities, especially the guy dressed like a dandy, he’s probably from one of the spires. The other guy appears to be half elf and older, a bookish type, with the glasses, the walking cane, and the gloves.

Elmer started to turn back and engage the Company more about what was going on when suddenly, the door opened again, and in ran a girl, Eryn recognized as Charles daughter, Mary. She ran up to the table, crying, and said, “Elmer..Elmer..Come quick! Sir Charles has been hurt really bad. He sent me to find Captain Murdock and you, and your friends. You all have to come!”. Blackmore stands up and rushes over to ask if he could help. She told him no, just Elmer and his friends here and Captain Murdock. He said only them and no one else. She said, “Please Elmer, will you..you all come quick?”. Which they all replied, ”Yes”, as they gathered their stuff to following her and Elmer. Blackmore stepped back and watched. At about that time, Sergeant Harris popped in the door. He said to the Warden, ”Hey Warden, you’d best come quick, you have a prisoner missing up at the prison!”. Warden replied, “What!”. Sergeant Harris told him he had guards searching the town and they sealed the town gates. “Everything is in a tizz up at the prison!”. Blackmore asked, “Who’s escaped?”. The sergeant replied, “It’s that crazy fucker, that beggar that tore up Captain Murdocks face, you know! I think you’d best hurry!”.Blackmore turned to his guests and said, “Gentlemen, you must excuse me, apparently someone’s allowed a wheel to come loose. Please enjoy your breakfast and when you’re done, I have quarters for you upstairs. I’ll send someone around later today to collect you for the prison tour! We’ll finish our business then!”. He joined Sergeant Harris and they exited quickly. Mary continued, “Please hurry, please hurry!”. Symon looked back over his shoulder at the Warden’s guests and saw that they were staying seated and eating still. Cassandra asked about coming with us but Elmer told her that Sir Charles didn’t ask for her, she should stay and keep an eye on those guests!“. She said she’d do that! Symon told her not to do anything foolish but just keep an eye on them. She told him that she’d keep them in line.

Mary hurried the group on and as they get to the court yard, they see a couple of horses already there. They are marked with the royal markings of the town. They followed Mary into the lobby where they saw some town guards were already posted there. The party continued, with Mary, up the stairs. She took them into the bedroom where they saw a very bloodied Sir Charles in the bed and in the room were Captain Murdock, Lieutenant Wainwright along with Father Nathanial, a couple of guards, and the Lady Anne, who is by his side. Mary moved to the bed. Sir Charles was in very bad shape. Father Nathanial told Sir Charles that he could help him to which Sir Charles replied, “Magic? Stay away from me!”. Sir Charles saw everyone was there and said, “I’m glad you’re here! It’s time! Captain Murdock, come close!”. Anne stepped back and Captain Murdock moved to Sir Charles’ side. Sir Charles reached out and tookl the Captain’s hand and said, “Captain Murdock, the post is yours now! Take command! Hold it in the name of the King, the King of Nordane, and his return, even till the end of time. It’s your sacred duty and I charge you. Command now with honor and justice.”. Charles reached up and pulled his necklace off and the ring of office and handed them to him and said, “You are now the Wolf of the North. He asked Captain Murdock to hand him his sword which Murdock did. Murdock was very upset. Sir Charles had him kneel beside the bed and touched him with the sword and said, “In the name of King Lundore Nordane, I knight thee! Arise Sir Evan Murdock, Lord Mayor of Frosthaven, Lord Protector of Nordanlune, Steward of Coldspire, Guardian of the Realm, First Shield of the Royal Knights of Nordane, and Wolf of the North.”. Sir Evan rose and Sir Charles announced, “I now present Sir Evan Murdock, Lord Mayor of Frosthaven.”. He looked to Sir Evan and said, “I ask you to watch over my family!”. Lady Anne is broken and in tears.

Sir Charles said, “Now, with that done, everybody leave except Elmer, Sir Evan, and “, pointing at the members of The Company Clandestine, “you, you stay!”. People started to object but he shouted, “Out!”, even to his wife. Once everyone was gone, he motioned for Elmer to come closer. He said to Elmer, ”Elmer, I’m sorry! You were right! Forgive me! I was a fool! I couldn’t do this alone, and I should have known better! I know that now! I should have shared this with others!”. He weakly lifted his hand and pointed to the office, east of the bed and said, “They surprised me! Two of them and that beggar, the crazy beggar. It was a man and a woman, they were all in black, they were fast, so fast, I’ve never seen anything like it before. I came in on them and they were searching my office. The beggar talked too much, I can say that much. They wanted the book. They were looking for it. They couldn’t find it, I hid it, months ago. They tried to make me tell but I wouldn’t say. They’re trying to bring them back Elmer! They need it to find a way to make that happen. They already have the map. They have the map and you…”. Elmer breaks in, “I don’t know what you are talking about.”. Charles said, “They can’t read it. They are looking for a way to read it.”. He pointed to Angelique and said, “You are in danger!”. She said, “From what!”. He ignored her and turned to Elmer and said, “Elmer, you have to stop them! You can’t let them! You must stop them somehow. They’re not what they pretend to be. They’re not beggars.”. Then he fell back into the bed, exhausted, and gave the death rattle. Angelique leaned over and asked, “Where is the book?”. Charles said, “The court….floor!, Agatha Lorraine!”, then he died.

Elmer and Captain Murdock go over and look in the office and see it’s just tore all to hell. Someone really went through that place. It’s like a tornado hit it. Shit’s just busted open, furniture is ripped up, it’s a complete wreck. Eryn suggested that Sir Evan put a guard in here and keep them here until he’s had a chance to go through it. He called out for the guards to come in stand watch on the room. He let Lady Anne and Mary know that Charles had passed. Cal-El was standing near the western door and opened it to see if there was anything in there. He found it to be a very nice bathroom with a nice tub in it. There was a big fight in the office and blood everywhere. There was blood on the floor leading to the bed, he had ended up in the floor and someone helped him onto the bed. Angelique suggested to Sir Evan that he have the rest of the house searched to be sure there was no one else here. Symon also suggested that they put guards on the Lady Anne and Mary. Someone may think they know where the book is hidden and may try to get the information from them. Sir Evan called out to Lieutenant Wainwright who opened the pocket doors and entered the room. Sir Evan ordered the guards to go through every room in the house and see what they can find. Lieutenant Wainwright and a couple of guards started going room to room, searching the house. Angelique looked out the back door in the bedroom, and found a raised patio with some nice outdoor furniture on it.

Elmer suggested that everyone leave the room and leave the family to mourn together. Everyone backed out and waited while Sir Evan gave orders and managed the event. Once in the lobby, Sir Evan stated, “I need to know more about what that was all about. I haven’t a clue what all he was talking about.”. Symon suggested a private place to talk. Eryn followed up with, “Maybe that private place should be the courtroom so we can begin…”. About that time, Lieutenant Wainwright came in from the kitchen and said, “Lord Murdock, you have to see this, your not going to believe it!”. Sir Evan said, “Everyone come!”. He motioned everyone around and took everyone downstairs into the cellar where they saw the secret door was partially open. As they look through the door, they saw the body of a beggar, Eryn recognized as Rogard, lying on the floor, stiff as a board. It looked like he died, right where he lay.

Wow, what a twist! I bet no one was expecting that. Sir Charles dead, the Captain was now the Lord. Rogard was dead. He’d been poisoned using the poison that turned the victim into a stiff, literally. The Company Clandestine learned a little more about the assassins, they are a team, a male and a female. They are very violent as they tried to beat the book’s location out of Sir Charles, and basically beat him to death. Angelique was in danger? Still much has happened but also, much is unknown. Well, let’s get back to this next week. I have an early day tomorrow.

Full Version

Well, last week, Eryn searched the prison. That was a very risky proposition. This week though, they searched the remainder of the tunnels. They then had to make some plans. How would they present their findings to Sir Charles. How will they gain his trust. Is he to be trusted himself? They weren’t exactly sure who to trust. Well, let’s see how they handled all of this.

We’ll start with the company in the secret hideout room. They decided that there were some places in these tunnels that they missed and should search while Eryn was still invisible. Eryn changed back into her stealth gear and then went outside the room to make sure the exit from the secret room was not being observed. The rest of the party left it’s safety and they headed to the room where Tommy’s body lay. As they came within view of it, they saw the portcullis was still down. Cal-El went to the room with the levers and unlocked the portcullis and flipped the southern lever raising it. They entered the chamber with Tommy’s body and Eryn went up the ladder to listen at the hatch. She didn’t hear anything and seeing a lot of rust, she broke out her oil and lubricated the hinges and the mechanism to open it. She tried to open it but it was just too heavy for her. She backed down and asked Xor to push that open. He carefully pushed it open with a little creaking and moaning from the hinges. He climbed down and Eryn climbed up and looked in the room. It was easily recognizable as a room that the company would be familiar with. It was the cell that Sergeant Harris put them in after the fight with the Hazel brothers at the Dogg Butt Inn. She tried to see if there was. A way to open the hatch from this side should they ever get thrown in jail again. She determined that it would be nearly impossible to open from this side without tools. There was really nothing to be gained here so she went back down the ladder, closed the hatch, and told everyone where it came out.

They moved down to the western tunnel leading out of this room. They didn’t go check out when they were here before. It made a turn north and ended in a double sized domed room with a grate in the ceiling again. There were some packs that must have belonged to the kobolds. She searched those and found about 10 copper pieces. She searched the walls for any secret doors and found none. She rejoined the rest of the party and they made their way to the eastern tunnel across from the secret room with the entrance to the prison. After moving to the end of that, they found another domed room with another dripping pipe in the ceiling. Thinking about where they were in relationship to the prison, Eryn said she thought it was from the Temple of Phi. They backed out of that area and moved to the area with the underground entrance to Sir Charles mansion. Eryn opened the door carefully and slipped in, then pushed the door almost closed with Xor putting a dagger in the opening to keep it from fully closing. She moved out of the back part of the cellar to the main part of it. There was a lot of wine and crates with food and drinks in them. On a table was a list of the wines there. She examined that list for anything that might have been especially nice but didn’t find anything recognizable. She moved to the steps leading up and out and listened. She could hear pots and pans being moved about and could smell some food cooking.

She snuck up the stairs and made her way out to a hallway. There was a door to the north and it appeared to be an exit from the house to the outside. Across from her was a closed door. She listened at it and heard someone cough and decided to leave it alone for the time being. She tried to determine, when we came in here, and how long we’d been below. We know the discussion with the boy in the prison happened just a couple of hours ago. It was Friday because that was when they were supposed to pay the Warden. So we’d been down there a couple of days. She moved to the corner Of the kitchen to look in. There was one man working with cutting some vegetables. There was a door that led out to the west here. She cracked that door and was able to see the main entry way on the other side. As she looked over her shoulder, the man working in here took an onion and moved to the sink, facing away from her. That gave her the opportunity to slip through the door and into the foyer. She closed the door behind her. There was a set of pocket doors to the north. At the southern end of the chamber was a big set of stained glass doors. There were two doors in the eastern wall and two doors in the western wall. Eryn had come through the most northern of the two eastern doors.

She moved to the southern door on the eastern wall and listened at it carefully. She carefully cracked the door. It was dark in the room. She opened it enough to get a decent look inside,. It appeared to be a small dinning room with no one inside. She closed that back up and moved across the hallway to the most southern door on the western wall. She cracked the door and found it to be a sitting room where the family probably relaxes and spends time talking, playing games, and reading. She checked the table to see what papers were present. The writing on the papers seemed to be that of a younger girl. The books on the book shelf were general stories and history of Paldegora. A couple of the books may have some value but she did not go there to take anything, so she left them lone and moved back to the door. She carefully peaked out and seeing the foyer clear of people, left the room and closed it up again. She moved to the most northern door of the western wall and listened carefully. Not hearing anything, she reached for the handle when she heard the pocket doors behind her open. She turned to see who or what was passing through and a young servant lady exited carrying a tray. She left the doors open as she headed to the kitchen. While she was gone, Eryn went to the pocket doors and looked in. The room was a large formal dining room. A table with 12 chairs around it and some serving stations. There was a door to the west of this room. It appeared the lady was setting the table. There was some talking coming from the kitchen and Eryn moved to the kitchen door to listen in. It was just a few general statements about the meal and the settings. The servant lady’s voice was getting closer so Eryn backed away quickly, avoiding contact as the servant left the kitchen with a full tray and headed back to the dining area. She went back inside and closed the doors.

Eryn returned to the northern door in the western wall. She listened again and didn’t hear anything inside. She cracked the door and seeing no one inside, slipped in and closed the door. It was a room where items of importance to the owners life were on display. Things he must have gathered over the years. There were lots of valuable items in here but that is not what Eryn is here for so she backed out and closed it up and headed upstairs. At the top, she was presented with a similar layout as the first floor but with only one set of pocket doors on the eastern wall. She went to the southern most door on the western wall. The door had a very nice lock on it. She listened carefully and was very sure there was no one in the room. She picked the lock and cracked the door. It was darkened but what she could see was a room full of boxes and trunks. There was a table in the middle of the room. She snuck in and checked the paperwork on the table. It was a listing of clothing items for two girls, Mary and Ann. It had two separate lists with numbered items that seemed to correspond to the boxes. The items listed were mostly of gowns and things for formal events. She backed out of the room and closed it and relocked it.

Eryn moved to the northern door in the western wall. She listened and heard a cough and some humming from a younger girl. She decided that this must be the daughter‘s room. She left it alone and went to the pocket doors in the eastern wall and listened. She didn’t hear anything. She cracked it to find a pretty large room with four large bookshelves, a desk, and a couple of chests. She slipped in and closed the doors behind her. She glanced at the books and found general books on languages, cultures, and different areas of Paldegora. She slipped around to the desk. There were a lot of papers on it, official writings with seals on them. There were a couple of chests behind it. She searched the papers on the desk and quickly realized that this was Sir Charles home office. There was nothing about where they are, just the reason they were put in there, date, and their sentence. She looked through each person’s sentence. Fran was sentence to life in prison for “smuggling magical items”, and ”magic use”. Shea got the same thing for “magic use”. Rogard has been in there for almost a year of his five year sentence for assault.

Eryn looked all over for Rogard’s book. She moved to the chests behind the desk and searched them. One, she opened, had files, ordered by date. They went back over a very long time. He kept very detailed records. She searched for the date that Rogard was sentenced to see what was in there about his situation. The records showed that he was being arrested for vagrancy. He got violent and attacked Captain Murdock. His belongings were confiscated. He went wild when they took the book from him. Then it explains he was jailed at that time. She started looking forward from that date attempting to see a pattern to activities or anything written that might give a clue to the changes that came and why they came. She could see that the laws were changing. Magic was forbidden and he seemed to be harsher in his judgements. There was a definite change from that point forward. She didn’t find any indications as to why he changed. She opened the other chest and found financial records. Some of them have to do with trade, some are for the civil services, the prison’s budget was listed there, and other books like that. She looked at a one and quickly realized that if she were an accountant, it might make more sense but she didn’t know exactly what she was looking at and didn’t have enough time to do that kind of research. Rogard’s book wasn’t readily apparent. She also checked both chests for secret compartments but didn’t find anything. She looked through the books on the shelves quickly but they were very general. She didn’t see any place in the room that looked like some place to hide the book. She went back to the door and listened. She didn’t hear anything so she cracked the door and when she verified the hallway was still empty, she exited the room and closed the door.

Eryn moved to the double doors on the northern wall. She cracked the doors and peaked inside. Seeing no one, she moved into the room and closed the door. It must be Sir Charles master bedroom. It’s got a huge bed, a chest at the foot of it, armoire, and some nice chairs. There were doors in the east, west, north walls. The north wall corresponded to the back wall of the house and the light coming through under it indicates that it is an outside door. She moved to the eastern door. She listened to the door and didn’t hear anything. It was locked so she attempted to pick the lock. Her first attempt failed and then she heard some noise coming from the western door. It sounded like someone was in there. She tried to pick the lock again and succeeded. She cracked the door and peeked in. There was a book case and a desk and a chest. It’s smaller, more like a personal office. There are papers and journals and books on the desk.

She slipped in and closed the door and relocked it.

She noticed the scent of perfume in the bedroom that wasn’t there before. She listened at the western door and could here the sound of water splashing. The perfume smell is coming from that room. Mrs. Charles must be bathing and getting ready for the party tonight. She closed it back up and moved back to the double doors. She listened at them and didn’t hear anything. She checked over her shoulder to be sure the western door wasn’t opening. Seeing no change, she cracked the door and seeing no one out in the hallway, she slipped out and closed the door behind her. She moved back down the stairs to the main floor. She checked the stairs to see if they opened but found nothing there.

She moved to the dinning room and waited outside for the servant lady to leave again. She did eventually, headed back to the kitchen, and left the door open to the dining area. Eryn slipped in and moved to the door in the west of that room. She found it was a guest privy. She moved back out and into the kitchen. They were discussing the number of place settings and dining cards and stuff like that. As she slipped in, the door in the back of the kitchen opened and a man’s dressed as your typical butler came out. He checked with the staff about how things were coming along. He inspected the food and then left with the servant lady to check the dinning room. While they were gone, Eryn moved into and checked the servant’s quarters. She checked the desk and found some papers. They were mundane lists and schedules and such for a butler and the other staff. She checked the chest for the bed next to the desk. It was the butlers desk with some personal items. Nothing of importance. She slipped back out of the room and back down the stairs to the wine cellar and to the secret door. Thanks to Xor placing a dagger in the secret door to keep it wedged slightly open, she was able to open it and move into the tunnels. She told everyone what she had seen and learned. They finally decided that it might be good to have someone in the house for the dinner party. We decided there would be three guests and we should see what we can find out.

Eryn slipped back in and waited in the foyer for the guests to arrive. After a little wait, Mary came down and went outside. A little while later, Mary came back in and went into the dinning room. A little bit later, Sir Charles arrived with Father Nathanial who also brought an acolyte. Captain Murdock arrived as well. They moved into the dining room and settled in for a nice meal. Eryn followed and found a nice spot to settle into, out of the way. Strahd made a cameo appearance as well. They made a little small talk, mundane town things. Father Nathanial asked again about allowing him into the prison to console those housed their and see to their spiritual needs. The chit- chat turned back around to the daughter and that she had written a poem. She wanted to learn to play music, maybe form a band. The Lady Anne was an elegant and gracious host. The meal wound down and Nathanial and his acolyte left. The ladies went back upstairs. Captain Murdock and Sir Charles moved into a sitting room. Eryn slipped in behind them.

Cal-El decided to check on the goblin prisoners. They had all forgotten about them. They went back to the room where they left them and they were still there and fine. Cal-El feed them some jerky and gave them some water. The party moved back to the gate to see if they could get out. The gate was up and the way out was clear. They decided to leave Tommy’s body as it was, to preserver evidence. They also went back to the two secret rooms and stacked the stones up in front of the southern room as they had found it. They wiped away foot prints leading to or form those rooms. They wiped away foot prints going to and coming from the whirlpool exit. They discussed that it would be best, to talk to Sir Charles and Captain Murdock at the same time. That way, if one is bad and starts taking action that would prove that, the other would be there to witness it. We also decided that maybe we should get Elmer and have him with us as well. We just followed gut instinct and started a search of the system.

They followed the river west to the point behind the blacksmiths shop and climbed back out and headed to the inn. On their way, they noticed the forge was lit but they didn’t see Cassandra around. Elmer’s wagon was still there. Eryn said, we saw a prison roasted in the prison and she wasn’t on it.

Elmer said that he did talk to Sir Charles like we had asked him to do.

As they were deciding whether or not to mention finding Tommy’s body, which they decided to hold off on mentioning, Warden Blackmore, and two other men came in.

Discussion afterward

Chris, pointed out that the badass assassins did this.

Debbie, Angelique/Francesca is in trouble

David, pointed out that we just left that hidden place, that the city guard didn’t seem to know about it, and we were about to tell them about that place, only to find out that someone used the secret place that the goblins built to access the house, in order to get in and search the house and take out Sir Charles.

Kevin, the plot thickens

Chris felt like we can trust Sir Evan now. We came into this session wondering who were the good guys and who were the bad guys of this group and obviously Sir Charles doesn’t matter anymore. He thinks Sir Evan is going to be on the up and up.

Kevin said, remember what Elmer told us about Captain Murdock, that he’s just short of being a paladin, very right as rain kind of guy.

Chris, we’ll have to choose our next words carefully.

Kevin, that’s why I wanted to give you a week to think about it. A lot happened very quickly. Things just completely turned.

David, we have to find out what Sir Evan thinks about the Warden and Theo.

Kevin, think about the things that you’ve heard and the things that just happened. Obviously, this book is very important. There are a lot of different wheels spinning.
