Summary

Detail

They woke up the next morning at Bjorn and Elsa's. Elsa brought Angelique three herb bags. They were each the equivalent of a healing potion but require a little more work to consume than simply drinking a potion. They each held a little ball of herbs to chew on and swallow. It may not taste very good but it will help. Angelique was very thankful for the help. Bjorn escorted them outside and wished them the best. “You can always come here if you need to, to retreat. We'll help out as best we can. If they are in hot pursuit of you, please don't bring them here. Of course we'll defend our home to the death, but I'd rather not have my children have to get involved I that kind of a fight.”. X'or gave Bjorn 100 gold pieces to use however he needed to. He thanked him for his help. Bjorn told X'or that they do plan to go back over the mountains soon to reestablish contact. His children will need somebody as they get older. He wished them well on their tasks and they set out.

As they headed out, they were slowly climbing higher. The snow was thick, deep, and made the traveling slow going. It's quite a ways up. It's not as open up here as there were rocky outcroppings and ridges along the way. Cal, Eryn, and X'or were all able to move around pretty well. Everyone else was slowed a bit. Cal took the lead, looking for potential ambushes. He didn't see any sign of traffic through here recently. X'or checked as well and also didn't see anything. They listened, but didn't hear anything. They were probably still a little ways away from the Frostulf's but couldn't be sure. Cal, Loraine, and X'or used wolf pelts to help blend in. They kept moving slowly up, Eryn with her bow notched and ready to fire. Everyone was vigilant. Visibility was pretty good. Looked like more snow might be moving in later.

About half way up, they heard a sound, Eryn recognized it as the roar she'd heard two nights before. It sounded like it was coming from down the mountain. She turned to face behind them, looking for any sign of a creature but saw nothing. It sounded closer than when she had heard it two nights ago. Cassandra watched from the back, sword and shield drawn, and ready. Symon moved up closer to X'or. They heard the roar again but this time it sounded a little bit closer. Cal and X'or believed they were being tracked. They scattered off to the sides, up into the rocks and crouched down, hiding. They'd hoped they could ambush it. Cal, Eryn, and X'or tried to cover their tracks. They got quiet and waited. After a short time, they heard a snuffing sound. As it came into sight, it stopped and sniffed the air. It was huge. After a moment, it seemed to catch their scent and turned and charged.

Symon set off a fireball on the creature. Cassandra was already on the move, charging the creature. The fireball went off and then she got to it and hit it. Cal, Eryn, and Angelique all fired at it and missed or simply hit one of it's scales causing no damage. X'or ran up to hit it as well. He really cut into it. Loraine ran up and engaged but missed. The creature attacked Cassandra, hitting her with one claw. Cassandra hit back and sliced into it very well. Angelique cast Produce Flame and threw a ball of fire at it. Cal ran over to attack it, hitting it. Suddenly, Cassandra was overcome with fear. Symon fired a Magic Missile at it and hit it. X'or hit it and cut it down. From further up the path, another one came charging down. Loraine charged toward the newcomer. Eryn fired at it and hit it. Eryn fired again and hit again. The creature used a frost breath weapon and caught a lot of them in it's cone. The fight went on for only a round before they dropped the second one.

They finally decided it was a some sort of aberration, a creature created with some part of it being dragon and some part polar bear. When Cal hit it with Dragon Bane, it didn't seem to hit it any better. It must not be enough percentage of Dragon to cause the additional damage to it when hit. It appeared that the creatures had set up an ambush. That was a little scary. Symon took some of the fur for possible use as a spell component. He examined it for possible weaknesses and determined that fire was it's weakness. Like everyone else, Loraine had never seen one before either. Eryn sat on the top of the ridge and checked all around. She didn't see anything. She stayed there as overwatch until everyone was ready to go. Angelique did some more healing. They gathered together and set out again.

They made their way up through some winding paths until they came to a point where there was a ravine ahead of them. That was going to be a little risky to jump. They continued to make their way and then were suddenly attacked by three Frostulf's from the far side of the ravine. They were firing arrows at them. Loraine got hit. Everyone ran for cover, the arches planning to fire back at them from cover. Before many of them could get to cover, six more of these Frostulf's appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and attacked. Four of them charged Loraine. One attacked Cal, hitting him with all three of it's attacks. Loraine was missed by two of them, another one slipped and fell, the last one hit her for quite a bit of damage. Symon got lucky and was missed by all three of the creatures attacks. Loraine was also hit twice from bow shots from across the ravine.

Eryn charged the one on Symon and just tackled him to the ground. This freed Symon up to back out of range. He stepped back out of range of the bowyers. Loraine hit one, staying in the fight and ferocious. Xor ran out and joined Lorain hitting one of the Frostulf's on her. Angelique started firing at the archers hitting one of them. Cassandra charged up and attacked one of the Frostulf's on Loraine. This battle went on for quite a few rounds with Loraine collapsing. Angelique eventually took out the archer she had been firing on. Xor fell in the next round. Symon cast a slow spell catching 4 of them in it. The result was exactly what was needed. It made the Frostulfs worse at hitting them and made them easier to be hit by the party. It turned the tide of the battle. Cal, Cassandra, and Eryn moved in to handled most of the rest of the melee portion of the battle. Symon made it to Xor and then to Loraine and gave them each portions of potions to get them back up. Xor returned to the fight after drinking a full potion. Angelique kept firing across the ravine. They began taking them down over the next couple of rounds.

When the melee targets had all fallen, the two remaining bowyers on the other side of the ravine dove into the snow and disappeared. Angelique casts a couple of healings and then they moved behind a small ridge for some cover. These creatures were actually called Yetlings. Night came and the Elves took the watches as they were the only two that had any real chance of seeming them. A front arrived and began dropping snow on them. Cal took first watch. He used a wolf pelt to stay warm and to hide him from anyone approaching. Cal's watch passed without event. The snow was covering everything very well. Cal woke Eryn and she moved up to watch, also covered with the fur. Her watch was also uneventful. With a fresh 6 inches of snow on the ground, any tracks they had seen or possibly hoped to find the next day were now covered and gone. Cassandra handed off her potion of extra healing with two more doses of extra healing to Symon. Eryn handed off her full potion of extra healing to Angelique. Symon and Angelique were the two most likely to be standing and able to get help to any fallen as they weren't usually in melee range during combat.

Angelique gave out the 3 bags of healing herbs that Elsa had given her. One to Loraine, one to Xor, and one to Cassandra. After that, she used her healing spells to heal Cassandra, Cal, Loraine, Xor, and Eryn. They were not fully healed but were in fighting shape should they need to fight again. They discussed their fighting strategy a little. Symon suggested that they needed to be more careful about making sure they don't rush in before he can cast spells. When they do engage, he wanted them to know that some spells can hit multiple targets and that lining them up like we accidentally did this time, made it easier to get maximum impact from the Slow spell. They all made note of that. Cal also pointed out that had they used the ridge to the west of the main battle to draw them into, then the archers would have been somewhat neutralized. How he pointed that out, I'm not sure. Now that they know these creatures can hide as they do, they will be better prepared to spot and deal with them. Only the two Elves have infravision. So they will take the lead.

They ended the session there.
