Summary

Audra and Brandy emerged from Highport’s troll-carved tunnels, filth clinging to their skin. They waded into salty water to wash away the sewer’s stench. On the rocky coast, they met Old Bastard, who revealed Highport’s chaos—a manhunt sparked by the death of Markessa’s minion. He proposed leading rescued slaves to a cave where a ship would come to ferry them to safety.

The party retrieved the slaves from the tunnels, finding them tormented by kobolds with paint, insects, and one being somewhat transformed, growing stims and leaves. Pyreece calmed a leafy Merrill, while a naked Feador took her robe until other clothes could be found. Elenor suspected a Wand of Wonder caused Merrill’s condition. Pyreece found a wand and passed it to Elenor. The group secured boats, ferried the slaves to the room with the trolls and from there, guided by Old Bastard, trekked four hours to a pirate cave stocked with provisions. They rested, healed, and identified a the wand as a Wand of Wonder, a cloak of protection +1, and oil of slipperiness.

After two rest and heal sessions, a Triphyrion-flagged ship arrived. The slaves, including Feodor, who sought his brother Falvin, boarded with relief. Determined to rescue friends, the party learned from Old Bastard where to go to find the fortress in the Drachensgrab hills. Oglesby planned to forge papers from Sturm Bucholts’ documents to pose as guards delivering slaves to Kalen Lekos. Old Bastard left them at the south road, warning of checkpoints and spies.

Camping that night, they fended off nightwing bats that attacked during Kipp's watch. The next day, Pyreece cast a goodberry spell. Two goblins, Flubbort and Gonad, begged help against a beast. The party slew a werebear in a cave, confirming it wasn’t Falvin. Pyreece cured Kipp’s bite. The goblins, led by Chopear, offered a wheelbarrow with a goat pulling it as a wagon. They ultimately settled on a toll waiver signed by Bucholts and orders for guards to report to Sudderham signed by Turrosh Mak. Audra told them to never speak of their presence before allowing them to leave.

Using the papers to pose as guards, Audra took the lead. They camped under Elenor’s camouflaged Leomund’s Tiny Hut. Nearing the Drachensgrab hills, they spotted a lax garrison bearing Turrosh Mak’s insignia.

Detail

Audra and Brandy emerged from the troll-carved tunnels beneath Highport, their bodies caked in grime and reeking of the sewers. They waded into the salty water to rinse off the stench. Brandy waded in as well, both desperate to get rid of the stench. The rocky coastline stretched east and west before them, and there, sitting in a meditative state, was the man known as Mask, or Old Bastard, seemingly oblivious to their arrival.

As Audra began to speak, Old Bastard silenced her with a gesture, then nimbly scaled the rocks, glancing back toward Highport. From their vantage point west of the city, the harbor was visible to the east, its piers bustling with activity, though no one seemed to notice the group. Old Bastard descended and approached them, his voice low. He informed them that Highport was in chaos, with a manhunt underway. Markessa, one of the slavelords, was furious after her minion and several lackeys were slain. Thanks to Old Bastard’s misdirection, the city’s forces were chasing a false trail, but time was short. He proposed leading the rescued slaves east to a cove where a small ship, arranged by his contacts, could take them to safety in Hardby or another secure location.

The group agreed to fetch the rescued slaves. Brandy and Audra stayed to clean themselves off. Pyreece, Kipp, and Elenor returned through the tunnels, where they encountered kobolds excitedly decapitating troll heads. The party secured boats to transport the slaves, each member taking one to ferry the group. They navigated the waterways, but as they approached the slaves’ location, they heard frightened screams, animalistic growls, and guttural laughter, punctuated by flashes of light and more shrieks.

Rounding a corner, they found a scene of chaos. Kobolds were tormenting the slaves: some were bound, their faces painted with crude designs; others were covered in spiders and scorpions or draped in leaves like a bush. One slave, soaked and saddled, had a kobold riding him with a crop. Another, Feador, lay naked and bound, while a tiny kobold, barely four inches tall, scurried across the floor. The kobolds fled into the sewer as the party approached, leaving the slaves in disarray.

Pyreece tried to calm a panicked Merrill, who was sprouting leaves and vines, assuring her they’d find a solution. The group freed the slaves, brushing off insects and removing crude decorations. Feador, stripped of his clothes, was given a priestly robe by Pyreece. The party scolded the kobolds, demanding they retrieve Feador’s stolen garments, and Elenor examined Merrill’s condition, suspecting a Wand of Wonder had caused her leafy transformation, likely temporary but requiring further study.

With the slaves in tow, the party returned to the boats and rowed back to the tunnel leading to the coastline. Old Bastard guided them west, along the rocky shore, urging them to stay low and quiet. Kipp swam across a deep, swift current to secure a rope, helping the others cross. After a grueling four-hour trek, they reached an abandoned pirate cave stocked with provisions. Kipp and Brandy scouted the cave with Old Bastard, finding old tracks but no immediate threats. The rescued slaves, exhausted and famished, were brought inside to eat and rest on bedrolls.

The party searched the cave’s crates, finding preserved wine, water, and dry rations. The water was foul though. The slaves expressed gratitude for their rescue, and Feador was given clothes to replace Pyreece’s robe. Merrill’s leafy condition persisted, causing discomfort when she tried to remove the growths. The group rested for eight to ten hours, healing wounds and identifying items, including a cloak of protection +1 and an oil of slipperiness, which could prevent grappling or entanglement. The group rested and healed a second time, finally returning to fighting shape.

Old Bastard informed them that a ship was approaching, flying the flag of Triphyrion, signaling their allies. As dawn broke, a lifeboat arrived. That and the boat already in the cave made it possible to move thr slaves to the ship in two trips. The slaves boarded with joy and relief, though some feared pirates. Old Bastard assured them this ship was their best chance for safety. Feador, still searching for his brother Falvin, joined the slaves. Audra told them they'd keep an eye out for his brother. The party bid farewell as the boats sailed off.

Determined to find their missing friends, the party discussed their next move with Old Bastard. He warned that their destination, a stone fortress in the Drachensgrab hills guarded by Markessa’s elite troops, was a dangerous haven for monsters and warring tribes, all united in fear of the slavelords. He offered to guide them to the south road but would then return to Highport. Brandy emphasized their loyalty to their friends, a sentiment Old Bastard respected, noting he’d had similar resolve a year prior.

Oglesby prepared to use documents taken from Sturm Bucholts’ desk, and forge new orders they could use to pass the blockades. They traveled west, then south, avoiding Highport’s checkpoints. Old Bastard parted ways, cautioning them about armed checkpoints and the slavelords’ spies. The mountains loomed ahead, and the party followed tracks toward their destination.

That evening, they camped off the road, with Brandy taking first watch. Distant drums and yelps of large dogs echoed through the night, but her watch passed uneventfully. During Kipp’s watch, three large bats with seven-foot wingspans attacked from the sky. Kipp and Oglesby fought back, with the party rousing to join the fray. Elenor identified them as nightwings, subterranean bats with razor-sharp tails. The group dispatched all three bats. They continued their rest.

The next morning, Pyreece gathered berries to cast a goodberry spell, distributing them among the party. As they continued south, Kipp scanned for ambushes. They encountered two goblins, Flubbort and Gonad, who approached cautiously, hands raised. Speaking in Goblin, Kipp learned they were fleeing a beast that had killed their warriors and scared off game. Describing it as big, hairy but would tell them little more about it.

The goblins led them to a cave, where Kipp tracked large bear prints. Inside, he and Brandy found a werebear, which charged. The party fought fiercely, with magical weapons proving effective. After slaying the creature, it reverted to a human form, confirming it wasn’t Falvin. Pyreece cast cure disease on Kipp, bitten during the fight, to prevent lycanthropy. The cave held only bones and no treasure.

The goblins, joined by their chief, Chopear, rejoiced, calling the party “mountain slayers.” When asked about a wagon, they offered a wheelbarrow pulled by a goat, which Kipp declined. They said something about the slavers, suspecting them of being slavers. They mentioned papers that the slavers had given them. Brandy asked to see their papers, and Flubbort presented a toll waiver signed by Sturm Bucholts and a city guard assignment to Sudderham signed by Turrosh Mak. After tense negotiations, the party traded the papers for a promise to keep the werebear dead. Audra toold the goblins to never speak of them. Chopear agreed, and the goblins departed.

The party continued south, planning to use the forged papers to pass as guards reassigned to Sudderham. It was decided that the armor made Audra look more the part of a guard so she would take the lead with any encounter along the way. They traveled four more hours until dusk, camping behind a tree line near a deep pool or mountain, depending on perspective. Elenor cast Leomund’s Tiny Hut, colored to blend with the grass, allowing them to rest securely for ten hours. Kipp checked for tracks before they moved on, finding none.

As they neared the Drachensgrab hills, they spotted a small garrison bearing Turrosh Mak’s insignia. The soldiers appeared lax, smoking and inattentive.
