Summary

Detail

The party ventured down a scary hallway into a new maze of tiles. They reached a fork and checked both directions for tracks. Finding no clear signs of heavier travel and seeing the same bioluminescent fungus on the walls either way, they decided not to split up.

They went north first. The passage grew damp and cool, turning northeast and wrapping around into a larger chamber filled with more bioluminescent fungus. Some of the fungus began to move. They had never faced anything like these creatures before. They were called lyconids.

As the battle continued more creatures began moving, joining the attack. There was a myconid, a very large fungal creature. There were also violet fungus creatures that moved very slowly but lashed out with whipping tentacles. Basically, they were fighting three different kinds of fungus based monsters.

Combat began. Kipp struck a lyconid for 20 damage, releasing a ferocious cloud of spores that forced saves versus poison. Audra hit one for 7 damage. Brandy engaged another with her short sword for 8 damage. Oglesby shot one with his bow for 7 damage. Elenor used her sling but missed.

The lyconids slammed and released more spore clouds. One lyconid's arm broke off when it struck Kipp and exploded into a cloud of spores. At some point, Kipp seemed to loose focus and began wondering around, first into a violet fungus where it's whipping appendages lashed out and hurt him, and then south to a small alcove where he admired the walls. The fungus had infected his mind.

Brandy took out a lyconid and moved her focus to the myconid. Audra took out the lyconid she was fighting and moved to engage the lyconid hitting Kipp. She killed it but was attacked by one of the violet fungus with its many tentacle like arms.

Elenor landed more sling bullets into the myconid along with Oglesby's arrows. Brandy took it down and moved to help Audra with the violet fungus. One of it's tentacle like appendages wrapped around Brandy's leg before they killed it. That leg began turning black beyond where she'd been touched.

The party continued attacking, killing the violet fungus and the last lyconid. They fought the other violet fungus. Audra got too close and it wrapped it's tentacles around both of her arms causing them to turn black. Everyone was firing on this last creature and it died quickly.

Brandy and Audra applied Keoghtoms Ointment to their blackened limbs; the rot healed, and it additionally healed some of their damage. The fungal creatures appeared decayed and rotted, like undead abominations. Realizing “this was not the way”, as the voice had warned earlier, the party backtracked. The passage connected back to the earlier fork.

They tried other directions, hearing the voice continue it's message, “Turn back! This is not the way!”. One path lacked the luminescent fungus; the rock changed to dry shelly stone without moss. They followed it around to a chamber where they found weapons scattered about on the floor.

As Kipp moved to the far side of the chamber, a Clay Golem (which they called Rockman) emerged from the wall, where it had blended perfectly with the slate, and attacked.

Initiative was rolled. Kipp hit it for 11 damage with his longsword +2, but it barely scratched the golem. Brandy shot +1 arrows for 13 and 10 damage, also barely affecting it. Oglesby hit for 4 damage but again actually appeared to do little damage. Elenor slung a +1 bullet for 3 damage, doing more damage than the edged weapons. Audra landed a critical for 23 damage and follow-up for 14, still less effective than expected.

The golem hasted itself and became much faster. It struck Kipp for 14 damage. Elenor cast magic missile for 14 damage, hurting it noticeably.

The party realized edged weapons did little. Audra remembered that Pyreece had a couple of bashing weapons that might do better damage than their swords. She called back to Elenor about the weapons. Elenor retrieved the blunt magical weapons from Pyreece's equipment within the bag of holding and tossed them to he ground close to Audra and Kipp: a mace and a flail (both +1).

Brandy continued shooting for minor damage. The golem continued pounding Audra and Kipp. Audra picked up the flail, and though it was not a weapon she was proficient with, she was able to wield it and strike the creature. That hit did a lot of damage. Compounded with the other damage it had taken, it was enough to finish it. As Audra had hit the golem, it had also struck her for heavy damage.

Both Audra and Kipp had suffered cursed wounds that would require special healing. They were sore to the core.

The Clay Golem wore only a stiff leather garment around its hips and carried nothing. It smelled of clay and made no noise. Among the scattered weapons on the floor were a spear, battle axe, bastard sword, daggers (one exceptional), and other items.

Elenor also found Pyreece's +1 sling bullets (about 15).

The party discussed the golem's nature (only harmed by magical blunt weapons and certain spells, hastes itself, cursed wounds heal slowly or require high-level clerical healing).

They claimed the +1 mace and flail for future use against similar foes and took the exceptional dagger.

The session ended there.
